Love and Obedience (1 Peter 1:22)

Peter writes to the the pilgrims of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia to encourage them in the midst of persecution to conduct themselves for the person and program of Jesus. Peter begins in verse 22 of chapter one by stating that the believers have purified their souls, meaning they have accepted Jesus as their savior and had been cleansed of their sins and other impurities. Just as the believers from Pontus, Gaalatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia have had their souls purfied, so have I. I have trusted my life into the hands of the one whom carried the weight of the world on his mighty shoulders. Peter continues to say that they have purified their souls by obeying in the truth. This means they were keeping God’s comandments and laws in their hearts and being obedient to all the Lord called them to be, they kept their focus on Jesus. Matthew chapter 14 verses 22-33, emphasizes the need for us as followers of Jesus Christ to keep our eyes fixed on the Lord. In the book of Matthew, Peter the author of first and Second peter was called to walk upon the stormy waters. Peter stepped off the boat with sincere faith and trust in the Lord, and took his first step onto the water. Peter eventually got distracted and took his eyes of the Lord and immedietly fell in to the water. I find it interesting that Peter was the one out of the twelve disciples that was called to do this step of faith. This experience definietely impacted his relationship with the Lord and led to eventually share with the believers in 1 Peter 1:22 about obeying the truth and stepping out where God has called. Peter continues in verse 22 to say that they are to obey the truth through the spirit in sincere love of their fellow bretheren. Peter is saying here that they are to be obedient to the truth through the spirit in a genuine love for one another. Peter ends this verse by saying, “love one another feverently with a pure heart” . To love one another feverently with a pure heart is to love one another with a continually deep and passionate love, which comes from a pure cleansed heart of a believer. Since I have trusted my life into the hands of God and have a clean heart before him, I will faithfully follow him. I will follow him in obedence through the truth of his holy spirit which lives in me and genuinally display love to fellow believers in hopes to edify and build them up. I will choose to love feverently and to express this love daily to my brothers and sisters in christ. I will accomplish this act of love by praying daily for the Lord to search the depths of my heart and to cleasnse me of the impurities he finds. Only from a pure heart and heart fixed on the Lord, will I be able to share the love my brethern deserve, the love that christ desires for them to recieve. La Cruz
